Sony has announced an increase in the prices of its subscription service, PlayStation Plus.
PlayStation Plus is Sony's monthly subscription service for PS4 and PS5 consoles, under which users receive online multiplayer access, monthly downloadable games, and exclusive discounts on the PlayStation Store.
Sony has stated in its announcement that from May 20, the prices of PlayStation Plus for new customers will increase in certain selected regions. For this, Sony has attributed the change to the 'current market conditions.' The starting price for a 1-month subscription will be $10.99 USD / €9.99 EUR / £7.99 GBP, and the starting price for a 3-month subscription will be $27.99 USD / €27.99 EUR / £21.99 GBP.
The monthly subscription has increased by $1, and the three-month subscription has increased by $3. Sony stated that this price change will not apply to existing subscribers (except in Turkey and India), unless their current subscription is changed or expires.
This news comes in the midst of rising prices in the video game industry, especially in hardware costs. Sony itself had raised the prices of the PS5 console in March, citing 'continuous pressure in the global economic environment' as the reason. Earlier this month, Sony stated that it has not yet decided when the PlayStation 6 will be launched, nor what its price will be, as the problem of memory shortages persists due to the AI boom.
As expected, PlayStation fans have reacted negatively to this news; some people believe that PlayStation Plus should not be required for online gaming, and the increase in these new prices has made gaming on PlayStation even more expensive. Meanwhile, some others have criticized Sony for trying to attribute the price increase to 'current market conditions,' while also pointing out that Microsoft has recently reduced the prices of Xbox Game Pass.
It is noteworthy that this increase in PlayStation Plus prices occurred six months before the scheduled release of GTA 6. It is expected that when GTA 6 arrives, a large number of new users will come on the current generation of consoles. An active PlayStation Plus subscription is required to play GTA Online, and there is no indication that this will change when GTA 6 is released. Perhaps Sony is raising the prices now, thinking that when GTA 6 is released, it will gain many new PlayStation Plus subscribers who are interested solely in playing GTA 6 online.
Sony has projected a 6% decline in annual sales for its gaming business for the current fiscal year, which will fall to 4.42 trillion yen (approximately $28 billion). This is due to a decrease in hardware sales, as the PS5 has become more expensive than ever and is approaching its sixth anniversary. However, Sony expects profits from gaming to increase by 30%. This is due to a rise in first-party software sales and the absence of a significant impairment loss caused by Marathon developer Bungie this time. Insomniac's Wolverine game is scheduled to release in this fiscal year, and it will certainly make a significant contribution to Sony's performance.
